Sedum, Stonecrop

This spreading stonecrop is a quietly dependable groundcover that thrives in full sun, lean soil, and dry conditions where most plants would give up entirely. Soft pink flowers open in late summer and fall, drawing butterflies and beneficial insects at a time when other nectar sources are winding down, and the semi-evergreen foliage stays attractive through most of the growing season. It spreads steadily in a low, ground-hugging mat, rooting as it goes and providing meaningful erosion control on slopes and difficult sites. A Great Lakes native species, it contributes genuine ecological value alongside its practical function. Deer, rabbits, and pests all leave it alone, and it tolerates the challenging root zone beneath black walnut trees without complaint. Plant it in broad sweeps where its reliable, undemanding presence can do the most good.
