Lavender Mist Meadow Rue brings an airy, cloud-like quality to the partly shaded garden that few other perennials can match—its tall stems supporting masses of tiny lavender-purple flowers that hover like a fine mist above glaucous, fern-like foliage. A native of the Great Lakes region, it grows in a clumping form reaching two to three feet, fitting beautifully at the back of a shaded border or naturalistic woodland planting where its delicate presence creates depth and movement. The flowers open from late spring into summer and attract butterflies throughout their long season of bloom. Deer and rabbits reliably leave it alone, and it handles the challenging root zone near black walnut trees without complaint. It pairs beautifully with hostas, astilbes, and other shade-loving perennials whose bold foliage contrasts with its fine texture. This is a plant that rewards a slightly longer look—its beauty is real but unhurried, the kind that makes a shaded garden feel particularly inspired.
