Little Leo Leopard’s Bane is one of the earliest yellow perennials to bloom in the spring garden, its bright, cheerful daisy flowers opening just as the winter-weary garden is most hungry for color. The compact, mounding form at twelve to eighteen inches fits neatly at the front of a partly shaded border or in a woodland edge planting where its early-season presence is genuinely welcome. The flowers draw the first butterflies of the season, and the neat, fresh green foliage provides an attractive presence before and after bloom. It settles into partial shade with average moisture and well-drained soil, and asks for very little once it’s established. Reliably deer and rabbit resistant, it is also untroubled by pests or disease. Plant it in generous drifts where its early bloom can create a bright seasonal moment before taller perennials fill in around it.
