Columbine, Alpine

Alpine Columbine brings European mountain elegance to the partly shaded border—its deep blue, spurred flowers nodding gracefully above mounds of delicate, ferny foliage from late spring into early summer. One of the true-blue columbines, it opens rich clear-blue blooms that hummingbirds seek out with real enthusiasm, making it a lovely addition to any lightly shaded pollinator garden. Growing in tidy clumps about a foot and a half tall, it fits beautifully at the front of a woodland border or in a shaded rock garden pocket where its refined scale can be appreciated up close. It prefers partial shade with regular moisture and well-drained, compost-rich soil, and thrives in the cool conditions that Midwest springs reliably provide. Deer leave it largely alone, and it tolerates sites near black walnut trees without complaint. After blooming, let a few seed pods open and scatter naturally—columbines are generous self-seeders that reward a light hand with charming new plants in unexpected places.
