Cardinal Wyszyński Clematis is one of the most intensely colored red clematis in cultivation, producing large, richly hued blooms from midsummer through fall that look spectacular trained up a trellis, arbor, or fence. The bold flowers attract hummingbirds and bring an eye-catching vertical element to the garden at a height of nine to fifteen feet when trained properly. Like all clematis, it appreciates its roots in cool, shaded soil while its top-growth climbs toward the sun—a simple mulching of the root zone at planting time goes a long way toward keeping it happy. It tolerates the challenging root zone near black walnut trees, and with regular moisture it is reliably long-lived and vigorous. Prune it back in early spring to encourage the fresh growth that carries the best bloom. Train it up a decorative obelisk, through a climbing rose, or over a garden arch for a summer-long vertical focal point.
