Rhododendron indicum

Unit price perBack for the 2026 season.
Petite in every way, Bixby is an evergreen Azalea that will never outgrow its space. Lovely in foundation or patio plantings or as a small-scale edger. Grows slowly into a low, thick cushion of small dark green leaves that turn mahogany with the onset of cold weather. In mid-spring, the plant is smothered by funnel-shaped, wavy-edged bright red flowers. To ensure success this plant must have loose, acidic soil that drains well and will fail in wet, heavy, poorly draining clay. Amend heavy clay soil with shredded pine bark and add soil sulfur to lower the pH. Best in morning sun or part sun with with protection from winter sun and wind. Flower bud hardy to -20F.
