Fire Chief is an almost perfectly globe-shaped evergreen shrub with fine-textured, bright gold spring foliage that becomes flushed deep red in fall. This sport of the popular Rheingold has deeper color and is less prone to splitting. Slow growing, and needs no pruning to maintain its round shape. Perfect for grouping in the home foundation or featured as a rock garden specimen. Best given some protection from winter wind. May need protection from deer. The species itself is native to eastern North America, including Illinois, and is commonly used as an ornamental plant.
