Native Butterfly Weed attracts flocks of Monarchs and other beneficial pollinators like a magnet. It's very dark green, linear leaves and a low, mounded form make this plant ideal in front of taller plants. July brings masses of fragrant, bright orange bloom clusters that last for weeks. Not fussy as long you give it plenty of sun and soil that doesn't stay wet after a soaking rain. Deer resistant, and drought tolerant once established.

Common Bleeding Heart features delicate nodding pink heart-shaped flowers with white tips dangling from the stems from late spring to early summer. Its ferny compound leaves remain bluish-green in color throughout the season.
Halcyon Hosta features dainty spikes of lavender bell-shaped flowers rising above the foliage in mid summer. Its attractive textured heart-shaped leaves emerge blue in spring, turning bluish-green in color throughout the season.
Purple Coneflower has masses of beautiful lightly-scented purple daisy flowers with coppery-bronze eyes at the ends of the stems from mid summer to early fall, which are most effective when planted in groupings, also attracting pollinators. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its pointy leaves remain green in color throughout the season.
Grown at our Chalet Farm in WI, Francee Hosta features dainty spikes of lilac purple bell-shaped flowers rising above the foliage in mid summer. Its attractive textured heart-shaped leaves remain forest green in color with distinctive white edges throughout the season. A dense herbaceous perennial with tall flower stalks held atop a low mound of foliage, the medium texture blends into the garden, but can always be balanced by a couple of finer or coarser plants for an effective composition.
A rock star among perennials, blooming with abandon from June until frost with very little attention. Prolific, lavender blue saucer-shaped flowers with a lighter center top attractive, deeply lobed foliage. The plant is compact and doesn't get leggy or rangy, but still manages to meander through and around other plants in a most beautiful way. Lovely planted with yellow and orange flowers like Yarrow (Achillea) and Daylily (Hemerocallis).
Swamp Milkweed has fuchsia flat-top flowers with rose overtones at the ends of the stems from mid summer to early fall. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its narrow leaves remain grayish green in color throughout the season.
Beauty, functionality and ease of growth combine to make this ornamental grass a best-seller! Tall stems of wheat-like flowers rise in June above the clump of leaves and remain attractive well into the winter. Upright form makes it ideal for narrow spaces, but it also looks terrific when planted in mass. Mingles well with just about anything including Butterfly Bush (Buddleia), Blue Mist Spirea (Caryopteris), Coneflower (Echinacea), Cranesbill (Geranium), Daylily (Hemerocallis), and Shasta Daisy (Leucanthemum). Cut back old foliage to a few inches in early spring.
Cheerful, long-blooming daisies brighten sunny beds and borders and also make excellent fresh cut flowers. Becky is a sturdy variety with strong stems that support masses of bright white, 3-4" flowers with yellow centers in June and July. Removing the faded flowers really helps to extend the bloom. Looks great with Tickseed (Coreopsis), Dianthus, Salvia and ornamental grasses. Avoid heavy, wet clay soil.
Cold-hardy, versatile geranium variety makes an excellent flowering groundcover, rock garden plant and container plant. Magenta pink flowers bloom heavily in May, then sporadically for the rest of the summer on dense mounds of foliage. The small, dark green, deeply lobed leaves turn amazing shades of red in the fall.
Pow Wow Wild Berry Coneflower turns up the intensity from midsummer straight through fall, its vivid rosy-purple petals radiating outward from bold coppery cones that give any sunny border a jewel-toned glow. Native to the Great Lakes region, this garden-tough perennial sinks deep roots that handle summer heat and dry spells with ease once established. It reaches two to three feet tall and blooms with remarkable staying power, drawing monarchs, swallowtails, and hummingbirds to the garden for weeks on end. As the season winds down, the seed-laden cones persist and goldfinches flock to them through autumn and into winter. Plant it in full sun in generous drifts at the border’s middle or back, where its purple flowers pop beautifully against the warm tones of ornamental grasses. It shrugs off deer and rabbits and asks for nothing more than good drainage and a spot in the sun.
Autumn Joy Stonecrop has masses of beautiful clusters of pink flowers at the ends of the stems from late summer to late fall, which emerge from distinctive coral-pink flower buds, and which are most effective when planted in groupings. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its large succulent round leaves remain grayish green in color throughout the season.
The narrow, upright stems of this Liatris, also know as Blazing Star and Spike Gayfeather, are great for adding a vertical element to garden beds and sunny native meadows. Stunning when planted in groups. Kobold is a short variety that does not need staking. Dense spikes of small lilac-mauve flowers in July and August open from the tip of the stem downward. Excellent, very long-lasting fresh cut flower.
This fragrant, trouble-free blooming machine is a fantastic plant for beginners! Upright mounds of peppermint-scented foliage sport tiny blue flowers for most of the summer, attracting flocks of butterflies and beneficial pollinators. Plant near a walkway or in the herb garden so its delightful scent can be enjoyed. Deer and rabbit resistant.
Like no other hosta, one for the collectors; upright narrow tightly folded leaves resembling praying hands; dark green with a narrow gold margin and shiny undersides; provides a dramatic accent for the garden or border; lavender flowers are plentiful
Ornamental Features
The most common and recognizable of the ferns, this is a very tough and hardy plant, featuring tall lacy fronds all season long that continue to grow strongly through any adverse conditions. Grows best in shade with rich, moist soil. Has a great textural effect in gardens and can be used to hide a fence or other structure in the landscape.
Native plant valued for its late summer blue flowers, Great Blue lobelia is best in mixed border plantings behind shorter plants or allowed to roam freely in natural settings. 1" long blue flowers in late August are bunched tightly at the tips of the unbranched stems and last for about a month. For best results avoid hot sun locations and make sure the plant is kept evenly moist. Plays well with other natives such as Cardinal flower, Joe Pye Weed (Eupatorium) and Sedges (Carex).
This easy to grow, adaptable Nativar (variety of a Native Plant) is a magnet for the Monarch butterfly, bees and beneficial insects! Clouds of fragrant white flower clusters in August cover an upright mound of dark green foliage. Mingles well with moist soil-lovers such as Aster, Joe Pye Weed and Cardinal Flower. Keep in mind that Monarch caterpillars will munch on the leaves! For best results keep soil moist during dry spells.
Blooming for a good part of the summer the prolific, the deep yellow flowers of Zagreb are a cheerful addition to sunny gardens or walkways. Fine-textured, thread-like leaves form a compact, bushy mound that complements other coarser leaved plants. Plant 2 or 3 together for best effect and shear after flowering to get an autumn flush of bloom.
Blue Ice Star Flower has blue star-shaped flowers at the ends of the stems from late spring to early summer, which are interesting on close inspection. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its narrow leaves are light green in color. As an added bonus, the foliage turns a gorgeous yellow in the fall.
Striking hot pink and rose bells rise from compact mounds of interesting sea green foliage with ruffled edges; creates a stunning border front; great versatility; keep soil moist in heat of summer. Paris Coral Bells features dainty spikes of hot pink bell-shaped flowers with rose overtones rising above the foliage from late spring to early summer. Its attractive crinkled lobed leaves remain bluish-green in color with distinctive dark green veins throughout the year. The fruit is not ornamentally significant.
Cinderella Milkweed features showy lightly-scented shell pink flat-top recurved flowers with white eyes at the ends of the stems from mid summer to early fall, which emerge from distinctive rose flower buds. The flowers are excellent for cutting. Its glossy narrow leaves remain forest green in color with distinctive light green veins throughout the season.
