Although it can tolerate sunlight, it performs optimally in dappled shade.

Blue Hawaii Hosta makes the most of its shade-loving nature with richly blue-toned heart-shaped leaves that glow in dappled light and bring a cool, restful quality to the woodland garden and shaded border. The powder-blue foliage holds its distinctive color through the growing season, then transitions to warm shades of golden yellow and copper-bronze in fall for a quiet final flourish before dormancy. In summer, slender spikes of lavender-purple flowers rise above the mound, adding vertical interest to the layered shade planting. It forms a compact 12 to 18 inch clump that works beautifully as a groundcover mass or a repeated accent throughout the border, and it handles the challenging root environment of black walnut trees without complaint.
