Planting

Location:

For Ostrich Ferns to create their signature, enchanting display, plant them in a shaded area of your garden. They are a perfect choice for adding a touch of woodland charm and flourish in well-drained, moist soil. Be sure to protect them from any intense, direct sunlight, which can easily scorch their delicate fronds.

Spacing:

To allow these ferns to reach their full, majestic potential, space them approximately 18 to 24 inches apart. This gives their fronds ample room to unfurl and spread without competing for light or nutrients. Proper spacing is key to ensuring adequate air circulation and a lush, healthy appearance.

Watering

Water it regularly to maintain consistently moist soil, ensuring that the area remains shaded to prevent moisture loss and promote healthy growth.

Fertilizing

Fertilize these blooms with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring to support their growth and flowering.

Pruning

Prune the faded flower heads of this perennial in late summer to encourage tidy growth and prepare for the following blooming season.

Mulching

To help maintain the cool, moist soil that Ostrich Ferns adore, apply a 2 to 3-inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant in early spring. Mulching also works wonders to suppress weeds and regulate soil temperature, which is especially important for their shallow roots.
