For over 100 years, Chalet has been the trusted go-to destination for Chicagoland gardeners. Our horticultural experts have crafted care instructions with the unique characteristics of our local soil and weather in mind, so that you can feel confident helping your plants flourish.

Planting

Location:

Balloon Flowers thrive in full sun to partial shade. They prefer well-drained, fertile soil and do best in locations that receive at least 6 hours of sunlight daily.

Spacing:

Space Balloon Flower plants about 12-18 inches apart to allow for good air circulation and to accommodate their clumping growth habit.

Watering

Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry periods. Water at the base of the plant to avoid wetting the foliage, which can lead to disease.

Fertilizing

Apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in the spring to promote healthy growth and abundant blooms.

Pruning

Deadhead spent flowers to encourage continuous blooming throughout the summer. In late fall, cut back the stems to about 1-2 inches above the ground to prepare for winter.

Mulching

Apply a layer of mulch around the base of the plants to retain moisture, suppress weeds, and protect the roots during winter.
