This compact, mounding coreopsis delivers cheerful golden yellow blooms from midsummer onward in a tidy, under-twelve-inch form that fits neatly at the front of the sunny border or in container plantings. A Great Lakes native, it draws butterflies throughout its long bloom season while asking for almost nothing—full sun, lean well-drained soil, and minimal water once established. Unlike its larger cousins, it stays compact enough to tuck into rock gardens, container groupings, or along path edges without ever needing staking or cutting back. Deer and rabbits leave it alone, and it handles the challenging root zone near black walnut trees without complaint. Deadhead spent blooms to encourage continuous flowering, and expect this small but generous plant to earn attention well out of proportion to its size.

Rue is an ancient Mediterranean citrus-family herb from the Balkans. Romans used it in spicy herb mixtures, and while it has mostly fallen out of favor due to its bitter flavor, it is still found today in Greek, Italian, and perhaps most often, in Ethiopian cooking. In Ethiopia, a fresh leaf is dipped in coffee releasing oil and aroma, and the dried fruits, called Tenadam ("Health of Adam") are used in Berbere pepper seasoning blend and Shiro.
Chater’s Golden Yellow Hollyhock is a classic cottage garden favorite, sending up magnificent tall spikes of fully double, buttery yellow blooms that can reach 5 to 9 feet high in summer. The oversized, pompon-like flowers have a ruffled, almost peony-like quality that gives them an elegant, old-fashioned charm unmatched by single-flowered varieties. Plant at the back of a sunny border or against a wall or fence where the towering spikes make a genuine statement. Deer resistant and beloved by hummingbirds and butterflies, it self-sows freely to ensure the display continues year after year. A short-lived perennial that typically flowers in its second year, it’s well worth the patience.
