Bergenia, Winterglut

Winterglut Bergenia lives up to its evocative German name—“Winter Glow”—with some of the most striking cold-season foliage of any shade perennial, turning a rich, deep ruby-red as temperatures drop in fall and holding that intense color through winter. Bold clusters of bright pink flowers appear in early spring, rising above the broad, evergreen leaves to mark one of the season’s first pollinator events. The large, leathery foliage remains attractive year-round in partially shaded to fully shaded garden spots, providing reliable structural interest even in the depths of winter. Deer and rabbit resistant and Juglone tolerant, it thrives beneath deciduous trees and in challenging shaded spots. A four-season performer with particular winter distinction.
