Wide Brim Hosta Care Instructions

by Lawson Thalmann

For over 100 years, Chalet has been the trusted go-to destination for Chicagoland gardeners. Our horticultural experts have crafted care instructions with the unique characteristics of our local soil and weather in mind, so that you can feel confident helping your plants flourish.

Planting

Location:

Choose a shaded or partially shaded location for best growth, as this variety thrives in low light conditions. Ensure the soil is well-draining and rich in organic matter to support its lush foliage.

Spacing:

Space them plants 18 to 24 inches apart to allow for their mature spread and ensure adequate air circulation.

Watering

Water your Hosta consistently, allowing the top inch of soil to dry out between waterings to prevent root rot while ensuring it receives about 1 inch of water per week during the growing season.

Fertilizing

Feed it in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote healthy growth and vibrant foliage throughout the growing season.

Pruning

Prune back in late fall to remove any dead or damaged leaves and promote healthy growth come spring.

Mulching

Apply a 2-3 inch layer of organic mulch around the base of the plant in early spring to retain moisture and suppress weeds.
