Tough and hardy evergreen is best in large areas. Mugo Pine has stiff dark green needles and a highly variable habit of growth—it generally grows wider than tall in a broad, rounded and bushy form, but can also be trained into a multi-trunked tree if lower branches are removed. Adaptable to most soil types, except wet ones. Give this plant plenty of room to spread!
Bright, variegated summer foliage plus red winter stems give make this dogwood a favorite. Ivory Halo features pronounced creamy white variegation on the soft green leaves. Small creamy white flowers in late spring are followed by clusters of bluish white fruit that birds relish. Stems are blood red in the winter, providing welcome color during a drab time of year. Young stems develop the most vivid red colors, so old, thick canes should be pruned to the ground periodically. Easy to grow, but do try to avoid overhead watering. Gorgeous planted in small groups for its brightening effect and winter stem color.

Fire Chief is an almost perfectly globe-shaped evergreen shrub with fine-textured, bright gold spring foliage that becomes flushed deep red in fall. This sport of the popular Rheingold has deeper color and is less prone to splitting. Slow growing, and needs no pruning to maintain its round shape. Perfect for grouping in the home foundation or featured as a rock garden specimen. Best given some protection from winter wind. May need protection from deer. The species itself is native to eastern North America, including Illinois, and is commonly used as an ornamental plant.
This small, dense globe-shaped shrub is adaptable and hardy. With intensely blue needles, it's an excellent choice for form and color in the garden. The needles are highly ornamental and remain blue throughout the winter. This is a relatively low maintenance shrub. When pruning is necessary, it is recommended to only trim back the new growth of the current season, other than to remove any dieback. Deer don't particularly care for this plant and will usually leave it alone in favor of tastier treats. It is very adaptable to both dry and moist growing conditions, but will not tolerate any standing water. Also known as Blue Colorado Spruce or Colorado Blue Spruce.
