Bugbane, Brunette

Brunette Bugbane makes a dramatic statement in the partly shaded garden, its deeply cut, rich chocolate-burgundy foliage acting as a striking dark backdrop that makes neighboring flowers and lighter companions glow by contrast throughout the season. In late summer and fall, tall, wand-like stems rise above the dark mound to carry fragrant whorls of small, delicate flowers that catch the low autumn light and draw the eye from across the border. Growing in a mounding clump of two to three feet in partial shade with moderate moisture, it gradually fills a generous border space and rewards consistent care with exceptional presence. Deer and rabbits reliably leave it alone, and it supports butterflies and beneficial insects during its late-season bloom.
