One of the people that future gardeners will be telling stories about is Frank Morton. For over 25 years, Frank has been selecting and crossing, discovering, and creating new open-pollinated varieties of lettuce, kale, broccoli, herbs, and flowers. Rather than seek to control, patent, or license these exciting crosses, Frank releases them to the public, encouraging what he calls "Ecological Crop Improvement." One of his creations is this colorful Flashback Calendula, so named for the splashes of deep red color on the backs of the petals. It's destined to become an heirloom of tomorrow! A fabulous flower for mixed bouquets, the large, rounded umbels of 'Green Mist' start out a bold green, turning to white as the tiny flowers open. Also known as bishop's flower or false Queen Anne's lace, this practically care-free annual is an easy-to-manage addition to any garden, as it is fairly drought tolerant once established. Rich in nectar, it attracts beneficial insects. Take care when cutting, as the sap may irritate sensitive skin; wear gloves when harvesting or wash well after.

Indeed, the jewel of the garden! Peppery nasturtium blossoms are an elegant touch to salads, or try lining the plates of appetizers with the pretty leaves. (aka Livingston’s Pie Squash) Introduced in 1893 by Johnson & Stokes of Philadelphia. Amy Goldman, author of The Compleat Squash, says it is “the finest pie stock in the land.” Fruits average 6 pounds, making them the perfect size for two pies. Orange rind is covered in delicate netting; flesh is smooth, sweet, and fiber-free. Not the best keeper, so enjoy it for Thanksgiving or early winter.
