When the parents of James Igleheart of Indiana lived in Connecticut around 1960 they received these seeds from their Italian gardener. James’ wife, Diane, serves the tomato to guests and encourages them to save the seed and plant it. Yellow cherry tomatoes with a sweet, rich flavor and moderate acidity.

(Salpiglossis sinuata) Spectacular Chilean relative of the petunia, introduced in 1824. Branching 12-24" stems with 2" striped trumpet-shaped flowers in a wide range of almost metallic colors. Salpiglossis comes from two Greek words meaning trumpet and tongue, referring to the velvet-like blossoms. Annual.

The great meaty texture is paired with tangy, sweet flavor that make it an ideal sauce tomato. Fruits measure 2½-3¾". At Seed Savers Exchange (zone 4B), it was a bit later maturing but had above average productivity. Grown by Charles Salvaterra since the early 1980s, this heirloom tomato has been shared within the Hazleton, Pennsylvania community since the 1950s.

Compact, bushy plants produce an abundance of 3.5-4"" wrinkled fruits over an extended period. When eaten in the green stage, as is traditional in Japan, peppers are incredibly crunchy with just a hint of heat. When red, the fruits are sweet and slightly hotter but not as crunchy. Perfect for frying, this Japanese heirloom’s fruits are usually mild, but an occasional pepper (about one in 10) is hot. Kitazawa Seed Company played an instrumental role in introducing ‘Shishito’ to the United States seed trade; Seed Savers Exchange acquired the variety in the 1980s from the Urban Farmerseed company of Convent Station, N.J. 80 days from transplant. This stunning ornamental pepper makes a splash in both borders and containers. Bushy plants produce a dense canopy of dark-purple leaves and myriad small, conical peppers that ripen from purple to orange to dark red. The peppers measure about 3/4" long and stand erect on the plant; they are edible but very pungent and somewhat bitter. 

Instructions: Sow seeds indoors ¼” deep. Peppers germinate best in warm soil, so gentle bottom heat may be helpful until seedlings emerge. Wait to transplant outdoors until soil is warm.

This dark-pink beefsteak tomato boasts a great, moderately sweet flavor. Borne singly or in pairs, fruits mature mid-season, have a medium acidity and very thin skin, weigh from a half to full pound, and measure 3-5"" wide. Tall, leafy, indeterminate plants grow 5-6' tall. Betty Moore of Stow, Ohio, has stewarded this variety since 1983, when she received it from her mother, Oma Rachel Lively Miller, who bought it at a greenhouse in Fredericktown, Ohio, in 1943.

This historic variety originated in Japan and was introduced to the United States by the mid-1930s by seedsmen such as Henry A. Dreer of Philadelphia. Plants bear cream-colored, cylindrical-shaped fruits filled with spaghetti-like strands of delicately flavored flesh.

Painted Lady Improved (aka Bicolor Runner, Painted Runner), Friar Antonio de Arrabida described this species in Flora of Rio de Janeiro in 1827. Incredibly beautiful bi-colored blossoms are very attractive to hummingbird moths. This strain is less affected by warmer temperatures than other runner beans and is a prolific bloomer. Esteemed as both an ornamental and edible climber.

Growing Instructions: Sow seeds outdoors after danger of frost has passed and soil and air temperatures have warmed. Runner beans prefer full sun, although they tolerate part shade very well. Young pods can be eaten whole, or the beans can be eaten fresh or dried. Even the flowers are edible.

Participants in Seed Savers Exchange’s ADAPT trials gave this pink beefsteak tomato top marks! It has a delicious, well-balanced, sweet flavor and moderate acidity. Thin- skinned fruit grow 2-3" long and 3-4" wide, weigh 5-13 ounces, and mature mid-season. J. Orris Murphy received this variety circa 1989 from the Dwayne Bushman family of Council Bluffs, Iowa, and donated it to SSE in the mid- 1990s. The Bushmans had maintained it for more than 100 years.

The ‘German Pink’ tomato is a Bavarian heirloom and one of the two seeds that started it all at Seed Savers Exchange. Its potato leaf plants produce large 1-2 pound beefsteak fruits with very few seeds, a creamy texture, and are crack-resistant. It is an indeterminate variety, continuing to provide a steady harvest throughout the season. 

Slow Foods USA Ark of Taste praised its flavor, calling it “a full sweet… even floral.” With gorgeous pink fruit, this heirloom tomato is versatile, excellent for canning and freezing, but also for slicing and juicing. Heirloom, Non-GMO, Open-Pollinated, Organic.
