Rhododendron: Nova Zembla

Hardy red-flowered large leaf Rhododendron makes a beautiful accent plant in sheltered locations. Deep pinkish red, dome-shaped trusses of individual florets emerge from fat pointed buds at the branch tips in May. The spectacular floral display is effective for several weeks. Bold and lush-looking large leaves are evergreen with no fall color. Grows slowly into a broad, rounded shape. Spent flower clusters may be carefully pinched back before new leaves emerge. To ensure success this plant must have moist, loose, acid soil that drains well and will fail in wet, heavy, poorly draining clay. Dappled sun, east exposure or location sheltered from winter sun and wind is recommended. Flower bud hardy to -25F.
