Layered branching, long-lasting flowers and beautiful fall color combine to make this a multi-season ornamental tree. Creamy white, 4-petaled flowers (bracts) float all along the spreading stems in June and are followed by red, raspberry-like fruit that birds enjoy. Clean, dark green foliage turns various shades of yellow, orange, red and purple in fall, the color often persisting for weeks. The patchy gray-tan-rich brown bark that develops on older trees is a great winter feature. For best growth this tree requires loose, acidic and well-draining soil. We recommend amending heavy clay soil with shredded pine bark and adding soil sulfur to make it more acidic.
