Class description: Join us in the Learning Center for our first ever Intensive Bonsai Workshop for Beginners. During this two part workshop series, attendees will learn about the art, science and history of Bonsai trees through a creative, hands-on and small-group experience. Our expert host, Phil Malhiot, local artist and Bonsai extraordinaire, will guide the group in planting your very own bonsai tree, demonstrating key techniques for pruning and plant care.
Part 1: Saturday, January 15 will cover: the brief history of the Bonsai, different styles, how to start styling a Bonsai and long term watering and maintenance. You will leave part one of the workshop with a styled bonsai tree.
Part 2: Saturday, January 22 will cover: wiring, tools, soil, repotting and final care tips. You will leave part two of the workshop with a potted and styled bonsai.

- Session 1: 10:30 – 12:30pm on 1/15 + 1/22
- Session 2: 1:30 – 3:30pm on 1/15 + 1/22

The kit includes: 2 part intensive in-person demo, Starter 6” Bonsai Tree, planter, wire and soil.

Meet the Artist
Illinois native, Phil Malhiot, discovered the ancient Japanese art of bonsai in the mid 1980s and has practiced and taught the art since then. In 2006 he won the Best in Show award at the Chicago Botanical Garden’s annual bonsai show.
