Rhododendron, P.J.M.
PJM is the gold standard of hardier small leaf Rhododendron. Dome-shaped trusses of funnel-shaped lavender pink flowers emerge in early spring, overlapping with Forsythia, and last for weeks. Small leaves are evergreen, but turn a beautiful rich mahogany color in late fall. Grows slowly into an upright, rounded form. Spent flower clusters may be carefully pinched back before new leaves emerge, or plant may be sheared at this time. To ensure success this plant must have moist, loose, acid soil that drains well and will fail in wet, heavy, poorly draining clay. Because of its small leaves this Rhododendron will tolerate full sun locations, but does its very best with protection from winter sun and wind. Flower bud hardy to -25F.
